About

A Sequence of Steps is an automatic web-browsing tool. It presents a new way of experiencing the internet by creating different relations between websites. The trigger mechanism starts with a chosen point of departure but can lead you to the infinite space of the web without a conscious decision.

It is also a way to look at what happens when we turn technology on and let it be autonomous. Let it go for itself.

During the trip it takes random snapshots of where you went and collects these images in a photo album. There you can see all the images together next to each other creating new meaning derived from their original content.

Here you can travel the World Wide Web. Only the direction is not set.

Surf's up!

Take Down Notice

Since August 2014 the website is no longer active. My hosting provider received a take down notice from eBay:

> Dear ,
>
> We have just learned that your service is being used to display false
> or "spoofed": eBay pages, apparently in an effort to steal personal
> and financial information from consumers, and defraud eBay users.
> Specifically, it appears that a user is sending
> unsolicited messages which misrepresent the sender as eBay, and making
> false statements that encourage the recipient to go to a page hosted
> by you at
>
> 85.158.203.168 -
> http://www.asequenceofsteps.com/asos/page.php?url=http://pages.ebay.fr/help/account/managing.html
>
> asking to enter personal information. The purloined information is
> then sent to an email account and, based on our investigation of
> similar schemes, used to steal accounts and commit other fraudulent
> acts including international credit card and wire fraud.
>
> This matter is urgent - we believe that consumers have been falsely
> directed to this page and may be fooled into divulging personal
> information to a criminal if the page is not immediately disabled. We
> ask that you immediately disable the site at
> http://www.asequenceofsteps.com/asos/page.php?url=http://pages.ebay.fr/help/account/managing.html
> as well as any associated email addresses, so that this fraudulent scheme
> can be stopped. We further request that you provide us with all
> contact information that you have for this user so that we may provide
> this information to the proper law enforcement authorities.
>
> We sincerely appreciate your immediate attention to this important
> matter. We would also appreciate if you would take steps to confirm
> the accuracy of any contact information that your user may have
> provided to you in establishing the account. Should you have any
> accurate information that could assist eBay and law enforcement in
> tracking this individual, we greatly appreciate your assistance, as we
> know that you do not condone the use of your services for such
> criminal purposes.

Documentation

From before the take down there are only a couple of screen recordings. This one departures with the word 'Travel'. The next stop was always Google with the search query of the departure. Then a list of all links on that page would be compiled and it would randomly pick one link to travel to the next stop. At each stop an image link would be taken for the photo album later.

The trip could be stopped at any time by pressing the stop button or you could let it go on possibly for ever.

Selected albums

The albums are still online. The images that are in the photo albums are hot linked. Hence that sometimes only the address of the image is still available. When the travel stopped you could see the photo album of the trip. From there you could also buy a souvenir in the shop.
